But what about summer, that other brutal time of year when the thermostat pendulum swings in the other direction?
If you think about it, when it comes to home comfort, summer is easy compared to winter. That’s because in summer, all you have to do is turn your A/C on. You don’t have to fret about cold drafts or freezing pipes. Plus, in the summer the temperature difference between inside and outside isn’t as much (unlike winter when interior/exterior temps can vary by 50, 60, 70 degrees!) so not as much energy is required to cool your house. And if your home is already well insulated and air sealed, then even less energy is needed to keep you cool and comfortable.
No wonder people insulate when it’s cold outside!
But that doesn’t mean you should wait until the temperatures dip.
If your home or building needs insulation, think about doing it now, in the dog days of summer. Not only will you get a jump on other building owners whose thoughts are still in vacation mode, but the insulation you add NOW will reduce your A/C’s work load. That means less energy spent and a lower utility bill or two leading into autumn.
And the biggest benefit of insulating your building now? One less thing on your Building Winterization Checklist. Seriously, when the temps fall and the leaves drop and the first frost appears, don’t you have enough to do inside and outside the house? Insulating now will allow you to rest easy knowing that come fall, the insulation and air sealing is already done.
